31 Days of Hallowe'en: Day Twelve

 Day12: Paranormal Games

As I have said before, we enjoy being scared. It's about the adrenaline I believe, the rush when the fight or flight instinct kicks in and we jump. Sleepovers are very important, especially to girls. It's when you put the world to rights, talk about everything and stay up late having a good time with your friends. I'm sure these days it involves plenty of phones and tablets but when I was a kid, mobiles were only used for calls, texts and playing snake and most households only had one computer. I remember sleepovers with my two best friends where, for the most part, we'd stay in her room eating junk food, drinking fizzy drinks and watching films. In between it all we would talk a lot, but we never played games. Going to girl's night is as an adult we do play games, Card Against Humanity, Charades, whatever will get us a little silly and giggly. I have never played a scary sleepover game.

I have mentioned Ouija boards before, but they are not the only scary game to play at a sleepover. Now I am not suggesting you play these games, I certainly wouldn't but it shouldn't hurt to know about them

Bloody Mary

I mentioned this in my post about the Queen Mary and room B-430. Basically, you stand in front of a mirror and chant 'Bloody Mary' some people say three times some say five, some say as long as you like. It is mean to summon a murderous witch. I don't know why you would want to do this. My friends and I did do the Candyman chant five times in a mirror and nothing happened. Of course, they say the proper way to play that is to do it in the dark with a candle and manage to get to the light switch before he can get you but thankfully we never played that way.

Charlie, Charlie

The Charlie, Charlie challenge made the rounds on the internet at one point. Also known as The Pencil Game it is one that, at first glance, seems relatively harmless. You draw a cross on a piece of paper and write 'no' in two of the v shaped sections and 'yes' in the other two. Doesn't matter which are which. Next, you place two pencils in the middle on top of each other over the cross. You then ask Charlie if he's there and can ask him 'yes and 'no' questions. The catch is that Charlie may try to stab you with one of the pencils. I'd stick to a magic 8 ball.

Sara Sarita

You need two people for this game. Each holding a coin of the same value, you sit on the floor facing each other and say in unison "Sara Sarita, can I enter you game?" Then throw the coins in the air. If the coins land heads up you are in the game. You can then ask questions. Heads up is yes, tails up is no and one of each is maybe. To end, you must say in unison "Sara Sarita, can I leave your game?" at this point, keep asking to leave and throwing the coins until you get a yes. this sounds quite tame, but who you apparently contact during this game is two dead girls from Mexico.

Cat Scratch

This is one of the rare ones I wish I had known about as a kid. Also known as cat scratches and black cat scratch, the cat scratch game is an eerie one. One person is the story teller and the other lies with their head in the story tellers lap. Other people can be there but they have to remain quiet the whole time. The storyteller tells the other person a story whilst rubbing their temples. The story varies but is usually telling the other person that they're walking alone at night, making things as detailed as possible and at some point, the person sees too red eyes looking out of the darkness at them, this is the cat. The cat scratches the person and the story teller ends by saying "cat scratch, cat scratch, cat scratch" the person should then sit up and lift their shirt, they will find three scratches on their back.

There are variations on these games, there are others and even some you can try on your own. Others are a little scarier and more demonic. Also one involves breaking a mirror and if that's not tempting fate I don't know what is. By all means look up other ones, I will not advise you to try them, if you do, do so at your own risk. Whether for a party, sleepover or just pass the time, as I said there are some you can play on your own. If you really want to try one, I suggest the cat scratch game, it seems the safest to me. Personally, I think I'll stick to Monopoly and the like. Be safe, be careful and have a good day...preferably without a demonic friend joining you!
